Our Impact

Our stories win awards, shift conversations, change laws and policies, and highlight communities that are striving for social justice.

We care about the people behind our stories. We want to make life better for the communities we cover. That’s what we strive for with each story, and the details below demonstrate the breadth of our impact.

Holding people and agencies accountable is sometimes the only thing that results in an outcome that betters the lives of others. This organization is doing important work not just for these communities but for humanity in general.

The work put in by this organization to highlight alternative responses in this area is a testament to the hope that exists for a more resilient future generation.

Water Justice in the Central Valley

For the past three years, we’ve focused on how Californians living in the Central Valley, many of whom are people of color from low-wealth communities, can have access to clean water — a basic human right.

The investigation comes at a timely moment, presenting readers with the context around potential solutions rather than simply pointing out a problem. Bravo.

Disability Rights and Equity

We write about how to make our society more inclusive of people with disabilities and their families.

Clear writing and explanation of a difficult problem. I learned so many things about the mental health impacts to disasters and what solutions are proposed to help fill in these gaps. Great job to the California Health Report team.

Environmental Justice

We’ve been a leader in reporting on how communities of color and low-income Californians are affected by environmental hazards, and we always focus our reporting on solutions.

The publication shined a light on an issue that otherwise might not get much attention. There are many challenges to the pandemic, and this is one that could have gotten lost without her reporting on a sensitive subject. Excellent job.

Language Justice

We shine a light on how Californians who speak languages other than English are too often not given proper translation services in hospitals, doctors offices or with medications.

Thorough coverage that invests the reader in the problem, finds its roots, and explains how groups are trying to fix it.

Mental Health Access

We’re a leader in writing about how to remove barriers to mental health care, particularly for people of color and those enrolled in the state’s low-income health program, Medi-Cal.

A well-documented accounting of ongoing racial disparities in California services for children living with disabilities. The voices and visuals of community members pushing for change make for a compelling package.

Access to Health Care for Low-Income Communities

We’re often the first to report on how health care policies impact Californians who are enrolled in the state’s low-income health program, Medi-Cal, or who lack health coverage.

California Health Report takes on a complex and sensitive subject with evocative reporting and an emphasis on solutions. Bolstering statistical analysis with the thoughtful voices of frontline community activists, the story makes a compelling case for rethinking our response to domestic violence.

Children’s Health

We write about children’s health from a solution’s focused lens, and our Doctor’s Notes column helps bridge the gap between the clinic and the community.

Good reporting and writing informs those who don’t experience these challenges, thus creating empathy and awareness, and provides resources for those who do and the critical message that you are not alone.
